On July 7, 2024, JD(U) state president Umesh Kushwaha announced that Bihar MLA Anant Singh would be suspended from the party for six years—citing repeated violations of party directives, derogatory remarks against senior leadership, and Singh’s opposition to the party’s chosen candidate in the Patna Graduates’ constituency.
Singh, who also had his wife Neelam Devi expelled, told reporters he had no regrets about the action and called the party’s future bleak, arguing that the organization belonged to former chief minister Nitish Kumar and would crumble now that the man was gone.
The expulsion is part of a broader purge that now leaves JD(U) struggling in at least ten seats ahead of the state assembly elections, according to party insiders.
Singh vowed to form his own party, remain where he is, and never seek a ticket, but pledged to meet Nitish again and assured he would not criticize him.
The party has also requested the Bihar Assembly speaker to invoke the Tenth Schedule to disqualify Singh, while the next election cycle will test his claim of a political future beyond JD(U).
