The body of Niranjan Chandra Sutradhar, a 50-year-old jewellery shop owner, lay wrapped in cloth inside a drum floating near a sluice gate in Mymensingh's Begunbari area. Local residents spotted the container on Wednesday, prompting a police recovery that revealed an unidentified male victim. The scene was grim. Sharp-weapon injuries marked the head and chest, suggesting a violent end to his disappearance three weeks prior.
Identification turned on a small plastic token. Police found a membership card for the Mymensingh Hindu Cooperative Credit Union Limited in the trouser pocket of the body. Sub-Inspector Ruhul Amin of Kotwali Model Police Station said the credit union staff recognized the token immediately. “The people of the institution helped identify Niranjan after seeing the token,” Amin told Daily Ittefaq. His wife, Sumita Rani Sutradhar, and son, Joy Sutradhar, confirmed the identity on Thursday evening.
Niranjan ran a jointly owned jewellery shop in the Atharbari Building area and lived in a rented house in the Stadium area with his family. He vanished on September 20. His family did not file a general diary (GD) report initially, according to police, because he had a history of staying away from home for three to four days before returning. That pattern broke this time. He did not come back.
Officer-in-Charge Muhammad Shibirul Islam stated that the body was likely placed in the drum after the killing. “It is initially believed that Niranjan was killed and his body was thrown into the water,” Islam said. As of Friday morning, no one had been arrested. Police have not established a motive. The family is currently in the process of filing a formal complaint with the Kotwali Model Police Station.
