Rep Rich McCormick penned a letter to the Trump administration on Thursday, urging a federal inquiry into alleged H‑1B visa fraud plaguing Georgia's 7th Congressional district. He highlighted that the district has become a suspected hotspot, citing Atlanta’s major airport and the region’s rapid tech growth as catalysts.
McCormick warned that bad actors exploit the H‑1B program to secure below‑market wages and unsafe working conditions, thereby undermining the labor market for recent graduates. He said the abuse erodes public trust in the immigration system and may discourage lawful immigration.
In his letter, the Georgia congressman offered himself as an interlocutor, pledging to facilitate cooperation between federal and state law‑enforcement agencies. He added that his office will coordinate with local authorities to identify and prosecute fraudulent operations.
The H‑1B program, established under the 1990 Immigration Act, was designed to fill high‑skill positions that domestic workers cannot supply. McCormick’s criticism centers on the claim that the program’s safeguards have been breached, allowing a surge of exploitative practices.
The Trump administration has yet to respond, but officials are expected to schedule a task force meeting with state partners early next month, signaling a potential crackdown on the alleged fraud.
