The Ministry of Communications released a statement on 28 February 2024, rejecting Musk's claim that the Indian state is an oligarch.
Musk posted a tweet on 27 February 2024 that criticized India’s regulatory framework for Starlink and labeled the government an oligarch.
The ministry described the comment as "misconceived" and "baseless," emphasizing that it has taken steps to promote fair competition and transparency in the broadband market.
Minister of Communications Anil Jain warned that the government would take "necessary measures" if the remarks were repeated, citing concerns over national sovereignty.
Starlink plans to launch its satellite internet service in India later this year after receiving a provisional license in October 2023, a move the ministry said would not be affected by Musk’s comments.
The ministry also cautioned that any misinformation could spark diplomatic tensions and pledged to coordinate with foreign ministries to address the issue.
