Mahua Moitra has warned that a "revolution is coming," urging her supporters to flood the streets until they "reclaim our democracy from the clutches of this Chor." The TMC MP’s aggressive post on X landed squarely in the middle of a brewing institutional crisis within the Election Commission of India (ECI).
The trigger is the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. According to an Indian Express report, two Election Commissioners, Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, have formally objected to the deletion process and decision-making mechanics 14 times in recent months. They flagged specific issues regarding how names are being removed from voter lists, a move that has now spilled over into public political warfare.
Opposition parties on Wednesday demanded the immediate scrapping of the SIR exercise. They accused Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar of running the panel as a "one-man autocracy" and called for his arrest and impeachment. The attack is personal and institutional, aiming to delegitimize the current poll administration.
The ruling BJP rejected these claims. Party leaders argued that commissioners sharing differing views during official deliberations is a sign of a healthy, democratic institution, not a dictatorship. "The EC is functioning in a democratic manner," a senior BJP spokesperson said, adding that such internal discussions demolish the Opposition’s narrative of authoritarian control.
The EC itself issued a clarification, stating that differing views are a normal part of institutional deliberation and that all orders in the past year have been unanimous. The next flashpoint will be the final implementation of the SIR data, where legal challenges and further street mobilization are expected from the Opposition camp.
