September’s 995,576 scooter dispatches tip the industry close to a million, a 34% jump from 742,602 last year and a new high for the calendar month. But the real story is the 68% rise in e‑scooters, which now make up 186,692 of those units.
Honda’s Motorcycle & Scooter India pushed 383,035 units into dealers, a 46% climb and 121,482 more than a year ago, with 381,431 Activa and Dio models. TVS Motor’s 277,115 units, up 29% YoY, follow suit, but the iQube and Orbiter doubled their sales in September, a 102% jump.
Suzuki sold 106,274 scooters, a 1% rise, keeping its Access 125 as the top seller, while its e‑Access model slipped 14% to 573 units. Hero MotoCorp dispatched 96,254 units, up 67% YoY, and Bajaj Auto’s electric Chetak and Yulu lines sold 43,194 units, a 40% increase.
The 995,576 figure is a barometer for the festive push: dealers are fully stocked ahead of Diwali, and the market is poised to test the one‑million threshold next month. A surge not only signals healthy demand but also pressures OEMs to keep offering more value‑packed variants.
Looking ahead, the industry will watch the rollout of new EV models and any policy shifts on duty waivers. Buyers can expect more aggressive pricing and extended range offerings as manufacturers scramble to capture the holiday rush.
