Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, who had taught political science at JNU for eight years, said the university dismissed him abruptly on Oct. 9, 2023, without giving him a chance to respond to an internal committee’s report.
The dismissal, signed by Vice‑Chancellor Santishree D. Pandit, cited major misconduct, but Akoijam argues the committee’s findings were never shared with him and that the university bypassed Rule 8’s 30‑day appeal window.
He further claims that the VC violated Section 16 of the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act by revealing the identities involved in the inquiry, a breach of the Act’s confidentiality clause.
In a televised address to Congress workers in Imphal, Akoijam warned BJP and RSS leaders in Manipur that they were exploiting the case to silence dissent, calling it a politically motivated witch hunt.
He said he will pursue judicial remedies and contest the matter politically, and that students and alumni from Kashmir to Kanyakumari have pledged support, signaling a broader backlash.
The case has already attracted attention from national media, and Akoijam expects to file a petition with the Delhi High Court in the coming weeks.
