At about 7:30 pm, a Youth Congress march outside the men’s hostel at Kerala University turned violent when SFI and Youth Congress members exchanged stones, beer bottles, and burning torches, sparking a chaotic melee.
Police entered the hostel compound and deployed batons against the students; the law and order chief P. Vijayan was on site, and injured students reported being blocked from reaching the district hospital.
CPI(M) chief Pinarayi Vijayan condemned the incident as a ‘one‑sided attack’ and demanded that the police act impartially, calling for an investigation into the violence, which he said was pre‑planned.
SFI has called for a statewide class boycott and announced protests at the Secretariat and police headquarters; the investigation will be overseen by the state’s law and order chief, who vowed to bring the matter under control.
