Nana Patekar, the 75‑year‑old actor known for his intense performances in Hindi and Marathi cinema, died of cardiac arrest at a Goa hospital on Thursday morning after 45 minutes of CPR failed.
The actor had briefly stepped away from the silver screen in 1999 to serve in the Indian Army’s Quick Reaction Team during the Kargil conflict, following a late‑1980s enlistment in the Territorial Army and training with the Maratha Light Infantry.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on X that Patekar had "intensity, individuality and unmistakable presence," adding that the actor had "gone beyond the role." Bollywood stars Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh and others paid tribute on social media, recalling his authenticity and dedication.
The Maharashtra government confirmed that Patekar’s funeral will be conducted with state honours in Mumbai, including a ceremonial procession and burial.
Patekar’s military service began after he trained for a commando role in the 1991 film "Prahaar," and he reportedly lost 20 kg during the 60‑day Kargil deployment, citing harsh conditions on the front lines.
His death will be mourned by the film fraternity and by veterans who served alongside him, underscoring the actor’s unique blend of artistry and patriotism.
