A southbound Renfe AVE train rear‑ended a stationary Iryo train at 9:00 a.m. on the Madrid‑Andalusia high‑speed line in Toledo province, killing 10 people and injuring dozens.
The collision sent several carriages tumbling off an embankment, and the service between Madrid and Andalusia has been suspended pending investigation.
ADIF, Spain's rail operator, confirmed the incident on X and said traffic would remain halted until the investigation is complete.
Castilla La Mancha spokeswoman Esther Padilla said authorities could confirm 10 deaths but expected the figure to rise as rescue operations continue, while the cause remains unknown.
The Renfe train carried 397 passengers, and the Iryo carriage held 147, according to the operator.
Investigators are examining the signaling system and the train's braking data, and the incident is under the jurisdiction of the Spanish safety agency, the Dirección General de Seguridad Ferroviaria. A full safety report is expected within the next 48 hours, after which the line will reopen if no systemic faults are found.
