Delhi Police have arrested a content creator following the viral circulation of a video showing 19-year-old Lasonjit Reang from Tripura. The clip, which surfaced on social media roughly a month after the incident in Ahmedabad, depicts Reang and the creator in a context that has triggered severe criticism for alleged racial harassment. Reang, a resident of Ananda Bazar in North Tripura, told Times Now he had no idea he was being recorded until a friend sent him the link. "I was just there," he said, expressing shock at the platforming of the interaction as a spectacle of prejudice.
The incident has reignited a painful national conversation about the stereotyping of people from Northeast India. Reang emphasized that his identity and appearance should never be grounds for mockery or discrimination. "We are Indian citizens," he stated. "We deserve the same dignity and respect as anyone else." His account adds a human face to the often abstract debate over regional bias in urban centers.
The swift police action marks a rare, concrete response to what is frequently treated as a social media nuisance rather than a criminal offense. The arrest signals that authorities are treating the content creator's actions as a serious violation of the victim's dignity. Legal proceedings are expected to determine whether the content constitutes a criminal act under harassment statutes.
For now, the focus shifts to the courtroom. The content creator faces charges, while Reang and advocacy groups push for broader awareness campaigns to dismantle the racist tropes that persist against Northeast Indians in major metropolitan areas.
