Adani Power Limited’s proposed Chapar plant will become the largest private power facility ever built in Assam, following a 48,000‑crore investment announced last year.
The 3,200‑MW facility will be built in four 800‑MW units using ultra‑supercritical technology, designed for higher efficiency and lower emissions. Construction is slated to start immediately, with the first unit slated for commissioning in December 2030.
Adani Group director Jeet Adani told the ceremony that the project will generate up to 20,000 jobs during construction and 5,000 permanent positions once operational, benefiting local contractors and suppliers. He added that investments exceeding 80,000 crore across power, aviation and cement sectors are already translating into projects on the ground.
Chief Minister Sarma highlighted the plant as a centerpiece of the state's push to become an energy hub for the Northeast, citing the Advantage Assam Investor Summit 2.0 where multiple large projects were green‑lit. The foundation stone signals the start of a new chapter in Assam's development, with further stages expected to roll out as the plant comes online. The first unit is slated for commissioning in December 2030, after which the remaining units will follow.
