In Dhubri district, Himanta Biswa Sarma hammered the first stone of the 3,200‑MW ultra‑supercritical plant, with Adani Group Director Jeet Adani in attendance.
The project carries an investment of roughly ₹48,000 crore, making it Assam's largest private‑sector stake and the biggest power plant in the Northeast.
Sarma said the plant would turn Assam from a power‑deficit to a surplus state, cutting the average cost of electricity by one rupee per unit after commissioning.
He also hinted at future joint ventures, noting the state's push to blend thermal capacity with hydel and pumped‑storage projects that leverage Assam's topography.
The government plans to progress from foundation to commissioning in six years, with the first units slated to reach grid by 2030.
