Bombay High Court Justice Girish Kulkarni, joined by Justice Neela Gokhale, issued a scathing verdict Wednesday demanding the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) end street dumping of municipal solid waste in the city’s western suburbs.
The BMC had rolled out a city‑wide cleanliness programme covering all 24 wards, yet the court noted that garbage litter still mars streets, especially in Jogeshwari and Malad.
citing the worst dumps, the bench singled out Jogeshwari and Malad, where open‑space dumping has become a daily spectacle.
Earlier this year, on September 10, the same bench warned BMC ward officers of contempt proceedings if they failed to curb the problem, underscoring the need for stricter enforcement.
A resident of Jogeshwari described how piles of plastic and food waste now block the main road, forcing commuters to detour.
The court has scheduled its next hearing for October 22 and instructed the BMC to file a comprehensive affidavit detailing corrective measures taken since the last directive.
