At a public rally in Kakopathar, Assam, Minister Biswajit Daimary told a crowd that the ULFA had shielded the state from external forces for more than five decades.
In the same week, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed media, stating Daimary had meant the Anup Chetia‑led faction that entered peace talks, not the Paresh Baruah‑led ULFA (Independent) still banned under the UAPA.
The Mahila Congress president Meera Borthakur Goswami, citing the comments as problematic, wrote to Union Minister Amit Shah seeking clarification on whether the state government endorses any armed group.
ULFA split after internal rifts over negotiations; the Chetia faction signed a tripartite agreement in 2022, while the Baruah faction remains active and banned.
