Police arrested Sanjay Pratap Singh, a 73‑year‑old retired IAS officer, and his son Siddharth Singh, a lawyer, at Supreme Court Metro Station on 8 October 2024 after they were accused of killing 48‑year‑old Pawan Sharma inside a Delhi Metro train.
The incident unfolded in the upper car of the train running from Dwarka to Yamuna Vihar. Pawan, seated on a chair reserved for senior citizens, was confronted by the duo, who allegedly grabbed him by the neck and punched him in the chest, leading to a fatal injury.
Durga Devi, Pawan’s mother, testified that the coach was packed but no passenger stepped in to stop the assault. She said the first blow came from the father, who then handed his son to continue the attack, describing the moment as "grabbed by the neck, punched in the chest."
Sanaj Pratap Singh, a 1984 batch IAS officer with over 30 years in the service, served in Delhi and various union territories. He is based in Sector 44, Noida, and has a history of administrative roles, though unrelated controversies have never reached this level of scrutiny.
The arrested men are now in judicial custody for 14 days while the Delhi Police conduct a thorough investigation into the sequence of events and collect CCTV footage from the metro network.
A court hearing is scheduled for 15 October 2024, where the accused will face charges under the Indian Penal Code for murder and assault. Metro authorities have pledged to review security protocols to prevent similar incidents.
