Opposition leaders met on Wednesday in New Delhi to devise a joint protest strategy over the SIR exercise, with a draft motion to remove Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar already prepared, PTI reported.
The motion stems from an Indian Express report accusing Kumar of overriding suggestions from Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi to modify Form‑6 during the Special Intensive Revision, allegedly erasing names from the rolls.
Congress MP Rahul Gandhi called for Kumar’s resignation and, in a broader attack on the government, demanded Prime Minister Narendra Modi step down on moral grounds; Mamata Banerjee, speaking at a rally in Hooghly, urged compensation for voters lost under SIR and vowed to protest until the issue is resolved.
Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav warned that elections should not be held under Kumar’s tenure, labeling the situation dangerous for democracy.
The draft notice for a motion in both houses will be reviewed at the meeting, and if approved, the motion will be presented in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha next week.
