The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation will hand out a new internal audit — the 'Patel Report' — to its agents on Friday, following the resignation of Deputy Director Andrew Bailey earlier this week.
Signed by co‑deputy directors Christopher Raia and Andrew Bailey, the document claims to examine chapters where the bureau "fell short" and aims to rebuild public trust.
Patel, sworn in last year, had promised not to look back, yet he has already overseen terminations of agents involved in high‑profile investigations, including those linked to former President Trump, and those who appeared during 2020 racial‑justice protests.
Critics accuse Patel of weaponising the agency to rewrite history in favour of Trump, while supporters argue the scrutiny is essential to purge politicisation.
The report will serve as a blueprint for reforms, with officials pledging to "build safeguards strong enough to ensure the mistakes of the past are never allowed to define this institution again."
