Tripura’s inaugural tea auction centre opens a new chapter for the state’s 90‑million‑kilogram tea industry, positioning Agartala as a regional player alongside Assam.
TTDCL chairman Samir Ranjan Ghosh revealed that roughly 60 per cent of Tripura’s tea is currently marketed through auction centres outside the state, a process that can take up to 44 days. The centre promises to slash this period by about 40 per cent, a move that could save growers thousands of rupees in transport costs.
With 54 large gardens and about 2,800 small growers, the state’s tea sector is diverse. The auction hub is designed to bring every stakeholder – from tea garden owners to small‑holder farmers – onto a single platform, potentially unlocking better prices.
Buyers from Kolkata and Guwahati have already been briefed, and several brokerage firms have expressed interest in participating. The first auction is slated for early November, signalling a quick start to the new sales cycle.
For a family in the remote Dhalai district, the local auction means the tea leaves can be sold without a three‑day journey to Guwahati, turning a long‑drawn process into a swift, profitable transaction. The centre’s performance will hinge on sustained buyer participation and competitive bidding.
