Reserve Bank of India announced a bank holiday for September 21, 2026 that will affect all banking centres in Assam and Kerala. The decision follows the 2026 holiday notifications issued by the state governments, which list the day as the Janmotsav of Srimanta Sankardeva in Assam and the Sree Narayana Guru Samadhi in Kerala. Both observances are marked as public holidays, prompting the RBI to suspend branch operations in the affected regions.
The closure does not apply nationwide; banks outside Assam and Kerala will remain open as usual. Customers in the closed states can still access cash and transactions through ATMs, UPI, internet banking, and mobile apps, but services that require a physical presence—such as document submission, verification, and certain account‑related requests—will have to wait until the next working day.
Other regional bank holidays later in September include: September 22, when banks in Jharkhand will close for Karma Puja; September 23, when Jammu & Kashmir banks observe the birthday of Maharaja Hari Singh Ji; and September 25, when Sikkim banks shut for Indrajatra. In addition, all banks will be closed on the fourth Saturday, September 26, and the following Sunday, September 27, as part of the standard weekend schedule.
Bank customers planning to visit a branch should verify the holiday status at their local office before making a trip. The RBI’s holiday calendar is based on specific banking centres, so branch‑level checklists are essential to avoid inconvenience. Online and automated services remain fully operational, ensuring that routine banking needs can still be met during the holiday period.
