Sahil Thite was killed when a local train struck him at Bhandup Station in Mumbai on Monday as he crossed from platform 4 to platform 3.
The crash unfolded during a four‑hour stoppage of all suburban lines on the Central Railway main line, triggered by a fire in the relay room at Kanjurmarg station that caused a signalling failure.
Mumbai Police spokesperson Sanjay Patel said the train was on schedule and the tracks were not cleared for crossing, but preliminary investigations are examining whether the earlier disruption played a role.
Thousands of commuters were stranded on the Main Line, forced to walk along the tracks and rely on buses, auto‑rickshaws, and cabs to reach their destinations.
The Central Railway safety board will release a full incident report by the end of next week, and authorities are reviewing crossing protocols to prevent future tragedies.
