In the early hours of Oct 9, Delhi Police rolled out a 24‑hour guard detail around Gyanesh Kumar’s family home and the Election Commission building after crowds swelled outside the residence in a wave of chants and spray‑paint slogans.
The move follows a month‑long campaign by the Congress‑INDIA bloc to pressure Kumar into resigning over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Earlier this year, two senior Commissioners, Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, had publicly objected to the SIR process, sparking criticism from opposition leaders.
Chief Minister’s office confirmed that the Z+ security designation remains in place, but additional officers and CCTV units were deployed to monitor the perimeter. Police spokesperson Ranjit Singh said the extra measures were a direct response to the “escalating threat perception” after the recent sit‑ins and barricaded marches.
Locals on the corner of the residence’s street reported that the barricades forced them to close their shops for hours, while a nearby bakery owner, Meera Devi, said she had to shift her stall to a different lane to avoid the police cordon. The heightened security is slated to continue until the Congress announces a resolution for Kumar’s resignation or the protests subside.
