OpenAI unveiled its newest legal‑focused model, GPT‑6 Astra, on Thursday, aiming to give law firms a dedicated AI research and drafting tool.
Astra bundles a curated index of U.S. case law, statutes, regulations, and other legal texts, plus prompts engineered for precise legal analysis and drafting.
The company said the platform can be licensed by vendors such as Harvey and Legora, and will integrate with established legal software like Relativity, Clio, Intapp, and Thomson Reuters.
In a bid to stay ahead, Google expanded Gemini Enterprise for legal professionals last month, while Anthropic released Claude‑based tools for lawyers and Thomson Reuters debuted its own AI model, Thomson 1.0.
OpenAI will open a selective pilot for firms including Sullivan & Cromwell, Ropes & Gray, Cooley, Latham & Watkins, and Wachtell Lipton, with safeguards for confidential client data.
The rollout will start next week, and the company plans to roll out APIs for third‑party development in the following quarter.
