At 1:35 pm on Saturday, a man in a dark long‑sleeved shirt sat on the grass of the tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park, pointing at the Amur tiger Altai. The animal growled, then pounced, striking the man with powerful paws. Emergency crews arrived within minutes, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
South Yorkshire Police confirmed the incident and said there was no wider risk to the public. The park closed the enclosure immediately, evacuating visitors and canceling all scheduled tours for the day.
Park officials released a statement expressing sympathy for the victim’s family and reaffirmed that Altai is safe and will not be euthanised. The tiger, an endangered Amur species, remains in its 300‑metre raised walkway enclosure.
The incident has ignited debate over visitor safety protocols, with some calling for stricter access controls. Park management said it will conduct a full safety review and coordinate with the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs.
Authorities are investigating whether the man’s presence in the enclosure violated park rules and whether adequate signage was in place. A public consultation on enclosure safety is slated for the next quarter.
