Police in Rajasthan recovered the bodies of eight passengers after a Tempo Traveller plunged into a rainwater canal on the Delhi‑Mumbai Expressway near Seemlia police station at 7 am on Saturday.
The 20‑foot‑deep canal was reached when the vehicle, travelling from Madhya Pradesh to Jaipur, lost control after the driver allegedly fell asleep at the wheel. Seemlia Police Station In‑charge Nand Singh said the driver had first crossed the Karadiya toll plaza and was heading toward Sultanpur when the accident occurred.
High‑speed impact smashed the front of the Tempo Traveller against the median divider before it plunged. More than 12 passengers were rescued and transported to Medical College New Hospital and MBS Hospital; several are in critical condition.
Police are conducting a criminal inquiry into the driver’s conduct and the expressway’s safety measures. The Ministry of Road Transport will review the incident and consider tightening speed limits and installing additional guard rails near culverts.
