For anyone eyeing a luxury SUV that can still tackle mud and sand, the news that Land Rover is now building the Defender 110 in India is a big win. The P300 variant now starts at ₹1.07 crore, a reduction of up to ₹34 lakh from the earlier import price, giving buyers a full‑fledged off‑roader without paying extra for the tech they actually want.
The price cut comes with a hefty standard‑equipment upgrade. Where the P300 used to have 17 options that added ₹6.5 lakh to the bill, those features—electronic air suspension, Adaptive Dynamics, Terrain Response 2, Wade Sensing, a ClearSight rear‑view mirror and three‑zone climate control with rear cooling—are now part of the base. The P400 and D350, priced at ₹1.35 crore each, move from 29 optional add‑ons worth ₹17 lakh to a fully‑equipped package that includes configurable Terrain Response, an active differential, 20‑inch alloy wheels, heated third‑row seats and 14‑way power seats.
Under the hood, the Defender keeps its three power‑train options. The 2.0‑litre P300 engine delivers 221 hp and 400 Nm, the 3.0‑litre P400 pushes 294 hp and 550 Nm, while the 3.0‑litre D350 churns out 258 hp and a whopping 700 Nm. All come with an eight‑speed automatic and, thanks to local assembly, avoid the steep import duties that previously pushed prices higher.
How does this stack up against the competition? The Range Rover Evoque starts at roughly ₹1.2 crore in India, but its off‑road prowess lags behind the Defender’s Terrain Response system. Mercedes GLE models hover around ₹1.3 crore, offering similar power but less rugged capability. BMW X5 is priced even higher, at about ₹1.5 crore, and while it offers luxury and performance, it doesn’t match the Defender’s off‑road credentials.
The Defender will roll out across major Indian cities from June 2025, with the first batches expected in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Chennai. Buyers can book now at authorized Land Rover showrooms, and a waitlist has already begun for the P300. Keep an eye on the next few months—Land Rover may introduce a hybrid trim as part of India’s EV push, and the local assembly plant is slated to expand to meet rising demand.
