P Sandosh Kumar, the CPI Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha, told Times Now that the push for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation has grown beyond a fringe movement into a mass agitation. He said the INDIA bloc—comprising the Congress, Aam Aadmi Party, and others—has united under a single banner. The MP added that 200 MPs have already joined the protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, where police cordoning covers 40,000 officers. “It is a people's movement,” he said, pointing to the Bombay High Court’s Goa Bench ruling and the Supreme Court’s recent observations.
Kumar outlined a three‑pronged strategy: mass marches, a direct appeal to President Droupadi Murmu, and filing a case with the Supreme Court to fast‑track the resignation process. He cited the Maharashtra Election Commission’s revelations and dissent notes from junior commissioners as evidence of systemic mismanagement. “If the court doesn’t act, we will keep marching,” he warned.
While the opposition parties have rallied together, the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is split; only the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) continues to defend the Election Commission. Kumar criticized the BJP’s stance, saying the party has “tried to justify” the commission’s actions. He added that even parties traditionally neutral, such as the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), are now condemning the commission.
He also questioned why Delhi’s Jantar Mantar was blocked for the protest, arguing that the venue is specifically designed for organised demonstrations. “Why is the police deploying 40,000 officers for a 200‑member protest?” he asked, highlighting a stark imbalance. The MP slammed the move as an affront to democratic norms.
Kumar vowed that the INDIA bloc would continue to march and that the next protest is slated for the coming week. He said a meeting with President Murmu is on the agenda, and the Supreme Court case will be filed within days.
