Jamia Millia Islamia dissolved its student union in 2006 after a series of campus disturbances and has not held elections since. Two weeks of protests, including an 18‑day hunger strike by Ebin Basil and a 15‑day strike by Rehan Mewati, forced the administration to act, while classes and exams remained online until the Diwali vacation ended on November 8.
Registrar Mahtab Alam Rizvi announced that the Jamia Millia Islamia Students' Union constitution will be approved by May 15, 2027, and that elections will occur within six weeks of the new academic session slated for July 16, 2027. The order also revokes all show‑cause notices, suspensions, and expulsions issued during the agitation.
Students welcomed the decision as a victory, with protests ending almost immediately. On foundation day, 106th anniversary of the university, students cheered and returned to campus, celebrating the reinstatement of their voice after two decades.
Earlier, on October 26, the registrar had set a vague timeline that students rejected, demanding a constitution by December 20 and elections within 15 days thereafter. The university had also faced a pending Delhi High Court petition since 2012, which had stalled any election plans.
