Students at Lovely Professional University in Jalandhar staged a dramatic protest on Sunday, scaling a MiG‑23 aircraft and a tank as they chanted slogans, after a campus girl was allegedly raped on September 24.
The unrest erupted early Saturday night around 1 am near the university’s girls’ hostel, when students gathered in numbers exceeding five hundred, tearing windows, setting fire to flower pots and vandalising shop fronts.
Police said a Special Investigation Team, led by Superintendent of Police Major Singh of Phagwara, has been assembled to examine CCTV footage, forensic evidence, and the student’s statement.
LPU registrar Monica Gulati denied the rape allegations, calling the rumours "baseless," and urged students and parents to rely on official communications.
Students have demanded that all hostel staff be female and are set to meet with university officials next week, while authorities have diverted the Jalandhar‑Phagwara highway to control traffic.
The investigation will continue, with the SIT expected to submit its findings by the end of September.
