At a BJP executive meeting in Lucknow, Amit Shah demanded that Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav take the floor to discuss the Special Intensive Revision that removed 13 crore names—about 14 per cent of the electoral rolls—from the national register. He said the party was ready to expose the truth in Parliament, but the opposition would only create a ruckus on the streets—an affront he called "disgraceful". Shah’s comment comes amid a growing national debate over the integrity of the voter list.
Congress had previously tried to launch a formal impeachment of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar by filing notices, which were rejected, and later shifted to a "public impeachment" that was postponed by rain. The party now plans to move the motion on Saturday, the day before a massive rally at Ramlila Ground demanding the CEC's resignation. Mallikarjun Kharge will lead the motion, while the INDIA bloc is set to march in protest.
Rahul Gandhi has accused the Election Commission of undermining democracy and said the government would block protestors from reaching Delhi. The SIR has stalled parliamentary business before, with several sessions adjourned over the issue. The opposition says the revision was a deliberate attempt to manipulate the vote.
Shah warned that the opposition's refusal to engage in Parliament would prevent the house from functioning, citing past adjournments. He also highlighted the BJP's statewide victories in Haryana, Maharashtra, Bihar, Delhi, Puducherry, Assam, and West Bengal, implying the opposition's loss of electoral credibility.
With the impeachment motion on the calendar, Parliament will convene the special session on Saturday, and both sides are bracing for a showdown that could set a new precedent for electoral oversight.
