Vimag Labs has kicked off its first Indian plant in Jhajjar, Haryana, with a ₹50 crore investment. The facility, spanning 10,000 sq ft with room to double, is already shipping its inaugural batch of mid‑power electric motors and control units overseas.
The motors on tap are the company’s signature magnet‑free design, delivering between 200 kW and 300 kW—ideal for compact cars and light commercial vehicles. Vimag plans to bolt on a high‑power line at 570 kW and above as demand for fast‑charging, heavy‑duty EVs grows.
In a market where Bosch’s 350 kW units and Valeo’s 400 kW motors dominate, Vimag’s 200–300 kW kit offers comparable torque but with a lighter footprint and no rare‑earth magnets. That could shave a few kilograms off battery‑powered cars, translating to better range for buyers.
The launch lines up with Delhi’s push for 30% EV sales by 2030 and the tax relief on locally manufactured components. A domestic source also sidesteps the 15–20% import duty slapped on overseas motors, a relief that automakers eagerly welcome.
With the first batch already on the road, Vimag’s goal is to scale to 10,000 units a month as volumes rise, and to enlarge the site to 20,000 sq ft when demand peaks. The company is also scouting additional plants and forging supply‑chain partnerships to keep pace.
What’s next for buyers? Keep an eye on the 570 kW line’s rollout and whether Vimag can meet the surge in high‑power EV orders, especially from the upcoming electric bus and truck segments. The plant’s expansion could ripple through the whole Indian EV ecosystem.
