Rahul Gandhi led a protest at the Election Commission office in New Delhi on Oct 6, 2026, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the 2026 special intensive revision of electoral rolls. The march began at 9 a.m., with Gandhi holding a placard that read "Gyanesh, it's done, bro. Time to resign" and climbing atop Delhi police's yellow barricades to wave the national flag.
Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress chief, said the universal adult franchise secured after Independence was being undermined and accused the Election Commission of operating under the government’s direction. He warned, "Look, we are fighting against the injustice of the fact that the government is stripping away everything – all the rights of the people. And today the universal adult franchise that we received after Independence – this government is working to finish it off."
Congress MP Dharamveer Gandhi accused the government of undermining democratic principles in coordination with the poll panel’s leadership. He claimed, "Thirteen crore votes have been deleted, and those people have been deprived of their democratic right to vote. This is the biggest fraud in Indian political history, committed by the current government against the people of India with the cooperation of Gyanesh Kumar. We are going to fight to restore democracy and preserve the dignity of democratic institutions."
The protest drew a sizable crowd of opposition supporters, who shouted slogans and chanted the chant that became an internet meme earlier this year. Rahul Gandhi, dressed in his trademark white T‑shirt and beige trousers, walked past the barricades, waving the national flag overhead.
The Election Commission has yet to issue a statement, and the protest is expected to continue until the EC resigns or a formal inquiry is conducted by the Parliament.
