Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis slammed opposition leaders for marching against the Election Commission on Sunday in Mumbai.
The protest, led by Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray, gathered only a handful of participants, according to Fadnavis.
Fadnavis likened the opposition’s frustration to the film Ghajini, remarking that the SIR slated for 2026 and the 2025 appointment of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar cannot influence the 2024 elections.
Opposition leaders, citing an Indian Express report that Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had raised 14 written objections to the SIR in 10 months, demanded the ouster of Gyanesh Kumar.
The march also saw participation from Congress figures Balasaheb Thorat, Vijay Wadettiwar, Jayant Patil, Shashikant Shinde, Jitendra Awhad and NCP leaders Anil Deshmukh.
The Election Commission has announced it will review the SIR process before the 2026 elections, a move that could address the opposition’s concerns about voter roll purges.
