Advocates Shailendra Mani Tripathi and Chand Qureshi filed a petition in the Supreme Court on 9 October 2026 demanding contempt proceedings against Delhi Police, the Centre, Metro and Railway authorities for violating the Chief Justice Surya Kant‑led Bench order that barred blanket prohibition on metro trains and train arrivals at Nizamuddin and New Delhi stations.
The Bench had issued its directive on the same day, after the Chief Justice expressed concern over escalating protests that were threatening to disrupt city life.
The petition, filed under Section 12 of the Contempt of Courts Act, 1971 and Article 129 of the Constitution, calls for an urgent ad‑interim direction to revoke the blanket shutdown, enforce a regulated schedule and issue a public notice.
Despite the court’s directive, authorities have maintained a blanket shutdown across 57 metro stations and cancelled numerous train services, leaving thousands of commuters stranded.
Commuters in the National Capital Territory have expressed frustration; a resident from Delhi’s central business district said they were forced to walk 3 km for work.
The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the petition on 15 November 2026, where it will decide whether to issue the interim direction.
