Prime Minister Andy Burnham took the floor in Parliament on Monday, insisting that the alleged plot against RAF Fairford was orchestrated from Tehran by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. He said the intelligence community had linked the plan to IRGC operatives and that the base would not tolerate such threats.
The security operation that unfolded on 27 September saw dozens of residents from the nearby village of Hinton evacuated as armed police and bomb‑disposal teams combed the rural area. Three vans tied to five of the suspects contained petrol and an accelerant, though no explosives were found, police reported. The seven men arrested—six British nationals and one with dual British‑Iranian citizenship—were released on bail without charges.
A joint statement issued by the Foreign Office, signed by 25 countries including the United States, recognized the UK’s assessment of Iranian involvement. The declaration condemned Iran’s “criminal networks, proxy groups and state‑backed malign activity” and called for stronger safeguards for British and allied forces.
In response, the UK summoned Iran’s ambassador to London to express its dissatisfaction, describing the incident as part of a broader pattern of Iranian destabilization. The ambassador denied the allegations, and Tehran’s state media dismissed the claims outright. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defence has convened a security review of RAF Fairford and is coordinating with allies to tighten protective measures.
Residents of Hinton, including 52‑year‑old teacher Asha Patel, said the sudden evacuation disrupted their daily routines but appreciated the swift action. Patel, who lives in a house a mile from the base, noted that the community’s sense of safety has been shaken.
The UK will hold an additional briefing on the base’s security protocols next week, and the Foreign Office is preparing a formal protest to be lodged with the United Nations Security Council. The next diplomatic engagement between the UK and Iran is expected to take place at the upcoming UN General Assembly session.
