Congress Working Committee will convene on September 29 to steer a campaign aimed at forcing Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to resign amid disputes over the Special Intensive Revision of voter rolls.
The gathering will be led by Mallikarjun Kharge, with prominent figures Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Jairam Ramesh and KC Venugopal in attendance, signalling a unified front within the party.
The SIR, which over the past ten months has sparked 14 formal objections from Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, centers on contested amendments to Form 6, the handling of additions and deletions, and the centralised control of the electoral database.
In a statement, the Election Commission stressed that all orders issued are fully sanctioned by law and that every officer is empowered to suggest improvements, countering the opposition’s claims of procedural impropriety.
The Congress’s push comes after the party publicly accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah of orchestrating a “diabolical design” to shield the Election Commissioner, a move that could intensify scrutiny on the government’s role in the electoral process.
Ahead of the meeting, party strategists are expected to outline a roadmap for a broader assault on the government, positioning the SIR controversy as a rallying point for the upcoming general elections.
