Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened new RBI data‑centre facilities in Bhubaneswar on Sunday, promising a decade‑long push for safer, smarter banking. He stressed that cyber threats now grow faster than traditional fraud, making robust data centres and skilled staff essential.
The announcement comes after the State Bank of India admitted a data‑security incident last month, and several other banks have suffered similar breaches. Modi also highlighted that India now runs 59‑60 crore Jan Dhan accounts, a leap from the era of exclusive phone‑banking.
He contrasted the old "phone banking" model, where only a privileged few in Delhi benefited, with today's inclusive digital reach. He said every rupee that leaves Delhi now lands directly in beneficiaries' bank accounts nationwide.
The Cybersecurity Training Institute, launched during the ceremony, will focus on modern infrastructure and human resources to defend against evolving cyber‑terror threats. RBI officials will soon roll out training programmes, aiming to equip thousands of professionals for the next decade.
