The council election, held on Oct. 28, 2026, drew 150,000 voters across 11 constituencies. The Samajwadi Party captured the Varanasi Teachers seat and the Allahabad‑Jhansi graduates seat, while the BJP took the Agra‑Aligarh teachers seat.
Akhilesh Yadav posted on X, calling the result a "secret victory" for the SP’s PDA formula and urging workers to keep pushing until proof of victory is in hand. Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya countered, warning that the BJP will reassess its strategy and aim to regain dominance in forthcoming polls.
The two seats still pending – the Varanasi graduates seat and the Lucknow‑Agra independent seats – could swing the balance, but the current tally shows the BJP’s margin shrinking by 40 percent compared to 2020, a sign of growing anti‑incumbency among teacher voters. A Varanasi teacher, Ramesh Kumar, said he felt the SP’s win reflected the teachers’ desire for better representation.
With the BJP's share narrowed, analysts predict the 2027 assembly elections will be a tight contest. The SP’s consolidation of Brahmin, Yadav, and Muslim teachers could tilt the electoral map in its favor.
