Michael Jordan and Jordan Brand donated $1 million to Morehouse College in May 2021, a pledge that financed 32 scholarships and a $250 k multimedia studio that sits inside the Journalism in Sports, Culture and Social Justice department. The gift was part of the Black Community Commitment, a $100 million pledge announced in 2020 to support Black communities.
The studio, completed last year, contains a modular production suite, editing bays, and industry‑grade cameras. Director Emani Saucier said 65 to 70 reservations during the soft launch saved students over ₹25 000 compared with local rental prices, and the equipment is now available to the wider campus.
Morehouse officially opened the center on September 23, 2026, with a ribbon‑cutting hosted by Mikki Harris, chair of the department. Students already used the gear in August, producing content that amassed more than 1 million social‑media views. The same training contributed to a Maroon Tiger interview, "State of the House," which won the interview and discussion category at the 2026 Southeast Regional Student Production Awards.
Mikki Harris explained that Jordan’s generosity was the catalyst for expanding the curriculum: "The center bridges critical thinking and professional practice," she said. Morehouse says nearly 120 alumni from its journalism program now work in media, and over 60 have earned advanced degrees.
Shauncey Mashia Stelly, senior director of Global Purpose at Jordan Brand, noted that the partnership is a living example of corporate purpose: "We’re proud to support Morehouse and its students as they prepare for the next chapter of their careers." The center will soon open its reservation system to all campus students, and Morehouse plans to integrate the studio into its core curriculum.
The next milestone: a campus‑wide rollout of the reservation platform is slated for early October, with faculty workshops scheduled for November.
