Himashree Boro, a 20‑year‑old tribal dancer from Kamrup, had joined a performance troupe that took her to Visakhapatnam for a series of shows before she decided to return home for a bank examination scheduled in Guwahati on Oct 10.
She boarded the Dibrugarh Vivek Express (Train No. 22503) at 11:50 pm on Oct 5, 2023, from Visakhapatnam Station. According to her mother’s complaint, the train left at 12:10 am and was slated to arrive in Guwahati at 9:05 am on Oct 7. The last text she sent to her family, sent at 2:39 am on Oct 6, warned that she felt unsafe because “there were a lot of men around her.”
Police sources say her phone went dark after that message, and a bag she had carried was later recovered in coach S2. The Government Railway Police (GRP) in Guwahati filed a complaint through the 139 helpline, while the Railway Protection Force (RPF) was notified in Assam to aid the search.
The body was recovered from a forested area near Malayapuram in Srikakulam district, according to an RPF source who spoke to NDTV. At the time of discovery, the cause of death was undetermined. Investigators are examining the scene, the body’s position, injuries, CCTV footage from the train and platform, and the communications she made before going missing.
Manesware Boro, Himashree’s father, has expressed disbelief at the tragedy and urged the authorities to expedite the investigation. He and his family, who live in Chapaidang under Bonda Post Office, have filed statements with both the GRP and local police, demanding clarity on whether the dancer fell accidentally or suffered foul play.
