Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday that Moscow had turned down President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s 60‑day ceasefire proposal, which would allow Ukraine to hold presidential elections.
Zelenskiy had urged Russia to grant a two‑month pause, arguing that wartime elections are prohibited by Ukrainian law and that the current absence of elections undermines his legitimacy.
Peskov reiterated that both President Vladimir Putin and other officials have repeatedly stated that Russia seeks a comprehensive peace settlement, not a temporary truce.
With the ceasefire proposal dismissed, the next diplomatic engagement between Moscow and Kyiv remains unclear, and the Kremlin has signaled it is prepared to pursue all means to secure a lasting settlement.
