The French Ministry of Health announced that it had identified the Shamonda virus in a human for the first time, a finding that has already resulted in one fatality.
The Shamonda virus, a zoonotic pathogen first detected in wildlife in 2023, had never before been reported in humans. The patient’s identity and exact location remain confidential as authorities investigate the source of infection.
Health officials stated that the virus is not expected to spread between humans at this time and that the general population is not at immediate risk. They have also initiated a nationwide surveillance program to monitor potential outbreaks.
The Ministry will release further details once contact tracing is complete, and the World Health Organization has been notified to provide technical support.
