Kunal Ghosh, a TMC (Mamata Banerjee faction) MLA, was forced to abandon his journey to a Mamata Banerjee rally in Srirampur after a mob in Hooghly stopped his vehicle and battered it with stones and eggs. The attack, which happened on Saturday, left the rear windshield of his car shattered. Ghosh remained inside the vehicle as the crowd banged on the metal and chanted "Kunal Ghosh go back," according to a video shared by the party.
Ghosh called the incident an act of "jungle raj," alleging that no police personnel were present to stop the mob or clear the blocked road. He said he is heading straight to Lal Bazaar or Bhawani Bhawan in Kolkata to lodge a formal complaint. "They attacked my car with stones and eggs and blocked the road," he said. "No police personnel were present there."
The Trinamool faction immediately pointed fingers at the ruling BJP. Party chief Mamata Banerjee alleged that the BJP was trying to stop people from reaching her rally and accused the police of hindering her supporters. "Police are also stopping our people from reaching the meeting in Srirampur. Such things don't even happen in African countries," she said. Party leader Asit Majumdar called it a "pre-planned attack by the BJP, not a protest by common people."
The BJP rejected the allegations. Uttarpara BJP MLA Dipanjan Chakraborty described the incident as a "spontaneous response from the public." This latest attack is part of a wave of egg-pelting incidents targeting TMC leaders since the party's defeat in the May Bengal elections. Earlier this month, MP Mahua Moitra also faced an egg-pelting protest by alleged BJP workers in Nadia district. The Calcutta High Court has previously intervened in several such cases, directing the state government to report on actions taken against these attacks.
