On Monday, the Supreme Court, through a bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and KV Viswanathan, issued notices to the Ministry of Road Transport and Uttar Pradesh’s Chief Secretary demanding a detailed safety report on the bus fire that killed nine passengers on the Yamuna Expressway near Greater Noida on September 24, 2026.
The petition, filed by Agra resident Kishan Chand Jain, calls for the report to cover the cause of the fire, ownership, registration, permits, fitness, insurance, authorised capacity, and compliance with construction and fire‑safety requirements, and also demands that any transport vehicle with more than five unpaid toll challans be barred from crossing toll plazas until the dues are cleared.
Earlier this year, the Allahabad High Court had directed state officials to file an affidavit detailing safety checks and permits issued to such buses, a move that followed data shared in the Rajya Sabha showing 45 bus fire incidents between January 2023 and December 10, 2025, which resulted in 64 deaths and 145 injuries across India.
The bus, headed from Delhi to Bihar, caught fire near the 33‑km milestone under the Jewar Police Station area, a location that has seen its share of road safety incidents.
The court will examine the report before deciding on further measures.
