Dr. Vidyadhar Gaikwad, former Chief Medical Officer of the Pune Cantonment Board, received a barrage of phone calls in August demanding ₹5 lakh in exchange for promoting an event. The calls intensified on 23 September when Shinde’s group warned that goons would be sent to beat him if he did not comply.
On the night of 24 September, a gang of eight to ten men, led by Shinde, forced entry into Gaikwad’s residence. They assaulted the doctor with belts, sticks, and iron utensils, striking his face, stomach, and back. The victim, a paralysis patient, pleaded for mercy, but the attackers ignored him.
After the assault, the group vandalised household items and stole Gaikwad’s car, leaving empty-handed. The doctor sustained deep head wounds that required stitches, and other injuries were visible on his face.
Assistant Police Inspector Amit Shete has filed a case under sections 323, 337, 338, and 307, naming Shinde, Anna Dhamdhere, and seven others as accused. The investigation is underway to establish the full extent of the assault and to recover the stolen vehicle.
The incident has shocked the local community, where residents describe the scene as a brutal intrusion into a private home. Authorities are expected to convene a hearing within the next ten days to determine the next steps in the prosecution.
