Delhi Police officials confirmed that Gyanesh Kumar’s residence on Ashoka Road and the Election Commission headquarters are now surrounded by additional Z+ guards following a threat assessment.
The assessment came after demonstrators traced Kumar’s address and staged a protest outside his family home in Agra, forcing the police to rethink the security perimeter.
Earlier this week, about 5,000 officers were posted during a demonstration on Oct. 5, and the police detained 120 protesters.
The protests, led by opposition leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, demanded his resignation over alleged irregularities in the SIR exercise.
In a parallel legal development, the Supreme Court issued a notice to the Election Commission and the Centre on a plea that Kumar acted without the approval of the other two commissioners, but did not issue a suspension.
The next hearing is scheduled for Nov. 12, 2024, when the court will decide whether to reverse any of Kumar’s decisions.
