If you're waiting for the next big thing from BMW's electric lineup, the iX4 just set the table. This is the third model to roll off the 'Neue Klasse' platform, and it’s built to be a 4-door coupe SUV that actually looks like one, rather than a sedan with a roof rack slapped on. The headline spec here is the 112.2 kWh usable battery, which BMW claims delivers a range of up to 680 km. That’s a big jump from current models, and it’s powered by new cylindrical cells that pack 20% more energy density than the prismatic ones used before. The pack is integrated directly into the body structure, making the car stiffer and more efficient.
The charging story is where this gets interesting. The iX4 supports up to 400 kW DC charging on its 800V architecture. In a lab setting, you can go from 10% to 80% in just 21 minutes, adding roughly 296 km of range in ten minutes. But here’s the reality check: most public DC chargers in India don’t yet hit 400 kW consistently. So, while the hardware is ready for ultra-fast charging, your real-world charging speed will depend heavily on the infrastructure you find. AC charging is standard at 15.4 kW, which is fine for overnight home charging but not a solution for quick top-ups on the go.
Underneath the sheet metal, the iX4 50 xDrive is the launch variant, featuring a dual-motor setup. The car measures 4,782 mm in length with a wheelbase of 2,897 mm. It’s a substantial machine, and the design is aggressive, with a drag coefficient of 0.23 that helps those range numbers stick. Inside, you’re looking at a massive 17.9-inch central display, with information projected onto the lower windshield and an optional 3D head-up display. BMW has also thrown in a hands-free highway driving option that works up to 130 km/h, and a tow hitch that can handle 2,000 kg. It’s a tech-heavy cabin that feels more like a spaceship than a traditional BMW interior.
Now, let’s talk money. BMW has only released pricing for Canada, where the 50 xDrive starts at C$79,900. There is no India pricing, and no confirmed launch date for our market. The 680 km range is a preliminary estimate, and real-world figures will likely be lower, especially if you’re driving at highway speeds or rocking the standard 20-inch M Sport wheels. For Indian buyers, this is a 'watch this space' moment. The global launch is set for March 2027, but we expect a local debut sometime in 2027 or early 2028. Until then, treat the 680 km figure as the best-case scenario and wait for local testing to see how it performs in our traffic and heat.
