The operation theatre of Moga Civil Hospital became the scene of a burglary when a 19‑year‑old man tried to pocket 12 syringes while another patient received treatment. A security guard on duty spotted the attempt, tackled the suspect, and recovered the stolen items.
The theft unfolded against a backdrop of growing reports that injection‑drug users in Moga face shortages of clean syringes, prompting some to seek medical supplies from hospitals. Dr. Bajrang, who was on duty, recounted that the youth ran toward the theatre, grabbed the syringes, and fled before the guard could intervene.
Police officer Sukhdeep Singh said the station was alerted by the hospital staff and arrived within minutes of the incident. "We took the accused into custody and will pursue a full investigation," he told reporters.
The arrest highlights a broader security concern at public health facilities amid Punjab’s escalating drug problem. Local authorities have warned that unchecked supply of syringes could fuel overdose risks.
Investigators will now examine whether the theft was connected to the drug‑seeking population, and the case may prompt stricter controls on medical inventory and increased patrols around hospitals.
