Pradyut Bordoloi’s resignation opened the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat for a fresh contest. The BJP, Congress and AIUDF now vie for a constituency that swung to Congress in 2019 and 2024. Ajmal, the 76‑year‑old AIUDF chief and Binnakandi MLA, brings a history of electoral battles, having lost Dhubri by over 10 lakh votes to Rakibul Hussain.
Bordoloi had been a Congress stalwart; his exit leaves a vacuum that the BJP is eager to fill. BJP fielded former IAS officer Devasish Sharma, while Congress nominated ex‑MLA Sibamoni Bora, a strong contender who pushed the BJP to seek the AIUDF’s support.
Ajmal’s campaign pledges ‘humanity’ and tackles education, health, flood and erosion issues, stressing that minorities and majorities alike need attention. He warned that voting for Congress is akin to voting for the BJP, urging voters to look beyond labels. ‘We must address both minority and majority issues,’ he said at a rally in Hojai.
Vote counting is slated for October 9, after which the result will determine whether Ajmal re‑enters Parliament. A win could shift Assam’s parliamentary balance, challenging the BJP‑Congress duopoly in the region.
