The Supreme Court’s bench, headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant, scolded a lawyer who tried to list a case alleging Rahul Gandhi’s assets were disproportionate. The lawyer claimed Gandhi had said he was in touch with 200 officials from the ED and CBI, using that as a pretext for a hearing.
In his rebuke, the Chief Justice questioned the lawyer’s motives, suggesting the move was aimed at grabbing media attention. He also ordered the cessation of live streaming of the ‘mentioning’ process, effectively silencing the courtroom’s public broadcast.
Earlier this year, the Court stayed an Allahabad High Court order that had directed the CBI and ED to investigate Gandhi’s assets without even hearing him. The Court also instructed those agencies not to file any reports on the matter before the High Court for the time being.
The origin of the dispute traces back to a complaint by Vignesh Shishir, a BJP worker from Karnataka, who alleged misappropriation of funds by Gandhi. Gandhi has already challenged the High Court’s order and sought its transfer to the Delhi High Court.
A hearing on the case is now postponed until the Supreme Court reviews the stay, with the ED and CBI expected to comply before any further proceedings can resume.
